The Light of Life Foundation is an organization started by thyroid cancer survivors in the US. They seek to improve the quality of life for newly diagnosed thyroid cancer patients.

One of the goals of the organization is to recognize individuals who have made seminal contributions to thyroid cancer. This is the most high profile award in the US and it is made in conjunction with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The award cycles between a basic scientist, a nuclear medicine specialist, a thyroid surgeon and an endocrinologist. This year, endocrinologists were the only ones considered.

Out of a large group of the most eminent endocrinologists from five continents, the committee has decided that Dr. Furio Pacini of Pisa, Italy, is the most deserving recipient of the Light of Life Award and the Sonenberg Visiting Professorship for 2003. There will be a formal dinner ceremony at a restaurant in New York, with presentation of the Award from the President of the Foundation, Mrs. Joan Shey. We have asked him to serve as a visiting professor for two days at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. This will include meetings with fellows in training from Endocrinology, Surgery, and Nuclear Medicine. We have also asked him to make a formal presentation to the entire Department of Medicine at MSKCC on new advances in Thyroid Cancer. The topic can be of his choosing.

We are developing this Award into one of the most prestigious awards in thyroid cancer. The selection committee includes members of the LOL Medical Advisory Committee and the previous honorees.
